floor repair Q - opinions sought

I have a pretty large area of kitchen floor to replace, about 5'x5'. The entire kitchen had previously been overlaid, to the tune of 1-1/4" flooring. I am expecting to Rugged Rental this unit and install hardibacker cement board and ceramic tile over the whole kitchen - will this be more likely to prevent water damage, and would there be a problem just using cheap particle board for my repair?
