Painting melamine cupboards

Has anyone had good success with painting white melamine or "foil" cupboards.
By good success I mean it looks ok after a couple of years of regular use.

After reading about it, I'm confused why special melamine paint is
recommended in all cases. I can understand that if you go without primer. But
many home improvement sites are recommending regular oil based primer and
then melamine paint. If you get a good surface coverage with one or two coats
of oil based primer, what difference could the paint on top make? Oil based
primer produces a virtually impenetrable surface in my experience.
