My 19-year old daughter and her roommate have an apartment in
Berkeley, for $1650. When they went to renew their lease, they asked
for a $200 rent reduction. They based it on the fact that the much
larger downstairs unit was re-rented a few months prior at a reduced
rate, that was just a little over what they were paying. They called it a
"rent discrepancy" in their letter. I thought this was amusing and told
them I didn't think "rent discrepancy" was going to fly. Kind of like
when everyone on the air plane paid a different rate for the same
ride...that's the way it is.The landlords came back and offered a $100.00 reduction. I was
surprised. They are new landlords and way overbought on this 3-unit
IMO), but even they figured out that losing even a few weeks of rent
and having to clean and market the unit was worth losing $1200 gross.Interesting times.
